DOMAINE

Hubert Lignier
|

Laurent Lignier is taking his father’s
venerable domaine to ever greater heights
|
|
|
 |
Hubert Lignier
has rapidly become one of the most dependable
producers in Morey-Saint-Denis.
— Neil Martin
Lignier has fashioned
some lovely wines in 2019 and in particular his
lower level wines offer much to like.
— Allen Meadows
The 2019s, according to Laurent Lignier, possess “all
the characteristics of great Pinot Noir,” and
that's an analysis with which I would concur.
— William Kelley

|
|
To call Hubert Lignier
an icon is an understatement. Indeed, he was one
of the key protagonists responsible for putting
Morey-Saint-Denis on the map in the 1970s-80s. His
son, Laurent Lignier,
has had some big shoes to fill but he’s more than
succeeded — not just in taking over a huge legacy,
but also in ensuring continual progress at this
internationally acclaimed domaine.
|
Today, Laurent manages 9 hectares under vines, mainly in
the communes of Morey-Saint-Denis and Gevrey-Chambertin.
Although the viticulture had been free of synthetic
herbicides and insecticides for over a quarter-century by
the time he joined the domaine in 2006, Laurent has
steered his father’s already meticulous vineyard practices
in an even more rigorous direction: he has eschewed the
use of chemicals entirely, and embraced organics all the
way.
A lifetime of labour goes into every wine, including
countless hours of toiling in the vineyard. The thin clay
and limestone soil on the slopes where Lignier’s vineyards
are situated isn’t conducive to vigorous growth, so this
limits the crop naturally. Importantly, the sélection
massale system is the only method used to propagate
vines, a tradition that gives an extra touch of complexity
and character to the resulting wines.
Laurent believes that fruit of the highest quality is
essential in crafting better wines. At harvest time, the
pickers remove any unhealthy clusters in the field, to
avoid contamination of the healthy grapes in the baskets.
This is followed by rigorous manual sorting upon arrival
at the cuvérie, after which the grapes are
destemmed and transferred to the fermentation vats.
Laurent believes in an extended cold soak maceration
period that lasts between 15 to 20 days prior to
fermentation.

Hubert Lignier and his son, Laurent Lignier
|
 |
Hubert and Laurent
Lignier make a fantastic father-and-son team. Hubert
Lignier, now in his 80s, seems to be working just as
hard as ever, the male equivalent of Lalou
Bize-Leroy…
— Neil Martin
…Laurent’s négociant cuvées are among
the most serious of their kind to be found in the
Côte de Nuits, demonstrating genuine quality and
attention to detail rather than any attempt to cash
in on what is now, deservedly, a well-established
and increasingly in-demand name.
— William Kelley
|
|
Fermentations begin naturally, as they always have, and
take place in open-top cement tanks that allow manual pigeage
(punching down). The wines are never pumped — only gravity
is ever employed when moving the wines. The use of new oak
for the élevage is carefully restrained; the norm
being approximately 20% to 30% on the village wines and
up to 50% for the Premier and Grand Crus.
Laurent Lignier is a man of gentle intelligence and
thoughtfulness. He has more than come into his own as a
vigneron, and his sensitively rendered wines are perhaps
even closer in spirit to his father’s than the sometimes
slightly more showy and forward creations of his late
brother. Laurent allows the wines plenty of time in barrel
to develop their distinctive personalities and harmonise
their elements, bottling only after two full winters in
the cellar at minimum, and after a full 24 months in most
cases.
The resulting wines are fresh, fine and elegant, a
pleasure to taste from the barrel to the bottle. The wines
are the epitome of that classic Burgundian marriage of
power and grace — concentrated and layered, yet nuanced
and transparent. They possess wonderful aging potential.
These wines have taught us what to look for in a bottle of
great Burgundy where beauty and nobility coexist, in a
space where visceral and intellectual pleasure are not
mutually exclusive.

Year after year, we’re thrilled to share our
allocation from Domaine Hubert Lignier. The
outstanding 2019s mark yet another high point in
Lignier’s esteemed history, and reinforce the
domaine’s reputation for quality and absolute
elegance. This is a stellar collection, and you
really cannot go wrong with any of the wines across
this entire range.

|
From vines planted

south-facing exposition that is
beneficial for ripening. 30%
whole-bunch vinification and 20%
new wood. The wine debuted at the
domaine with 2017 vintage.
|
“Offering up notes of plums, orange rind,
spices and grilled meats, the 2019
Gevrey-Chambertin Regnard (négoce) is medium
to full-bodied, supple and charming, with
lively acids and a bright, enveloping core
of fruit. This has turned out very nicely.”

From vines planted
between 1936-1972 in Chenevery,
Clos Solon and Les Poroux. |
“Notes of plums, sweet berries, raw cocoa
and cinnamon introduce the 2019
Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie, a medium to
full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine
that's deep and sapid, with the most
structure and potential for aging of any of
Lignier's communal bottlings this year.” WA

Morey-Saint-Denis
1er Cru “Blanchards” 2019
|
S$ 195 + GST / 750 ML
|
A neighbour of
Clos Baulet, this clay-rich

Hospices de Nuits
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru “Les Didiers”
2019
|
S$ 242 + GST / 750 ML
|
A single
barrel purchased annually
from Hospices de Nuits. |
“A regular purchase chez Lignier, the 2019
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Didiers
(Hospices de Nuits) was, as usual, racked
into twice-used barrels when it arrived at
the winery. Exhibiting aromas of sweet berry
fruit, cassis, raw cocoa and spices, it's
medium to full-bodied, lively and rather
charming, with an elegant, seamless profile
that contrasts with last year's showing.” WA

Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru “Vielles Vignes”
2019
|
S$ 275 + GST / 750 ML
|
A blend of two
lieux-dits with 50- to
100-year-old vines that is
three-fourths Les Faconnières with
the remainder from Les Chenevery. |
“The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes
1er Cru comes from a single parcel that
traverses Chenevery (25%) and Faconnières
(75%). This comes from a plot planted with
sélection massale. It has a very
well-defined bouquet with mineral-rich black
fruit, wilted red rose petals and a faint
tobacco scent. The palate is very fresh and
saline, the tannins finely chiseled with a
discrete crescendo towards the finish. This
is just a beautiful Morey-Saint-Denis that
should not be ignored. Seven and a half
barrels this year.” NM 93-95

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2019
|
S$ 585 + GST / 750 ML
|
“Produced from old-vine fruit
from Monts Luisants giving tiny yields.
Produced with about one-third whole clusters
and one-third new casks for ageing, the wine
opens with a complex nose showing black
cherry fruit and a savoury, almost gamey
edge. The initial impression on the palate
is silky and accessible, but the tannin here
is immense, although very fine-grained.
There is impressive freshness and a finish
that goes on and on. Lovely. A superb Clos
de la Roche.” Decanter 98
“The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
comes from the two terroirs, the majority
from Mont Luisants and one-third from
Fremières. The vines were planted in the
Sixties and the late Fifties respectively.
It has a beautifully defined bouquet with
black cherries, raspberry, briary and rose
petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied
with grainy tannins, concentrated as you
would expect since it was cropped at
around 25hl/ha with wonderful minerality
on the finish. Outstanding.” NM

 |
Clos de la Roche “MCMLV” Grand Cru 2019
|
S$ 1,355 + GST / 750 ML
|
This ‘cuvée
hommage’ first debuted with
vintage 2017. From 26 rows of
vines in Monts Luisants climat,
planted in 1955. Less than 600
bottles produced.
|
“The 2019 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru comes
from the plot of vines planted by massale
selection in 1955 that tends to produce tiny
millerandé berries. Cropped at
18hl/ha it has a sublime bouquet with
wonderful delineation, perhaps more floral
than the regular cuvée, extremely well
focused. The palate is medium-bodied with
filigree tannins, an unerring sense of
symmetry with a very harmonious,
satin-textured finish that is so caressing.
Interestingly, this comes in at 13.6°
alcohol whilst the regular cuvée is 14.2°.
This is a stunning snow-capped peak of the
2019 vintage.” NM 97-99
|
|
Clos de la Roche “MCMLV” Grand Cru 2018
|
S$ 1,288 + GST / 750 ML
|
Less than 900
bottles produced.
|
“The 2018 Clos de la Roche Cuvée MCMLV comes
from a 0.25-hectare parcel that Laurent’s
grandmother said never frosted over. It has
a crystalline bouquet of vibrant red cherry
and wild strawberry fruit laced with crushed
limestone. The palate is silky-smooth on the
entry, with perfect acidity and pure
blueberry and cassis fruit fanning out
toward the sumptuous finish. It feels long
and languid, perhaps more modern in style
than the regular cuvée but with greater
density and finesse.” NM 96-98
