open-quote …the finest champagnes being made today in this historically important area north of Reims.
— Peter Liem

Like the wines of his mentor, Anselme Selosse, these are very far from being fruit-driven wines despite their scale and power, for they’re undeniably mineral and soil-driven.
— William Kelley

These single vineyard, mono varietal cuvées are hard to find but if you manage to locate a bottle, grab it, pay and run.

“By choosing to work with plots, I continue the work of understanding and interpreting nature. I try to capture the natural wealth and translate it in the best way in my cellar, without modification,” says Alexandre Chartogne.

Wise words of earnest and unwavering dedication from a young vigneron who has rapidly catapulted his family estate Champagne Chartogne-Taillet into superstardom after taking the reins in 2006.

What is remarkable is how humble this young man remains, both in person as well as in the way he sells his Champagne. Anyone who’s met Alex Chartogne will readily speak to his unassuming, soft-spoken and thoughtful demeanour; while his champagnes, in spite of lofty accolades and increasing renown, remain some of the best values around today. Alex says he wants more people to be able to enjoy his champagnes, even if they are limited in production, and therefore he tries to keep his pricing modest.

Chartogne-Taillet owns parcels in Merfy, and remains the only récoltant-manipulant (RM), or certified grower-producer, in the village. The soil in Merfy is clay, sand and sandstone over chalk, forcing the roots of the vines to “live in two environments” as Alex puts it. He had spent time working with Anselme Selosse in Avize and now applies Selosse’s philosophies in his own cellars and vineyards.

Chartogne has taken numerous measures to promote healthy biological activity in the vineyards, including engaging the services of brilliant soil scientists, Claude and Lydia Bourguignon, to map out the unique micro-features of the domaine’s various vineyards. He uses organic treatments, promotes biodiversity through cover crops, and encourages deep-root systems through regular ploughing, often by horse rather than by tractor to avoid over-compaction of the soil.

Influenced by Selosse’s non-interventionist winemaking philosophy, Alex only uses indigenous yeast, keeps sulphur addition to a minimum and does not filter. He vinifies each parcel individually — some in stainless steel, a growing number in neutral barrique and some in combination with concrete eggs depending on the individual wine, relentlessly refining his approach in order to achieve maximum purity of expression and energy level in his champagnes.

Starting with vintage 2006, Alex Chartogne began selectively vinifying his single-vineyards on their own. While some of the fruits from these vineyards still go into his excellent Sainte Anne and Le Rosé cuvées, the most distinctive fruits go into the single-parcel cuvées. They are usually mono-varietal and undergo longer élevage to gain depth and equilibrium. They are also very limited in production (usually less than 2,000 bottles per cuvée) and are distributed through a strict allocation system to select markets. Whilst they are not produced every vintage, we are privileged to have been able to offer them since the beginning.

open-quote I believe that Alexandre Chartogne is the most exciting young producer in Champagne.
— Terry Theise

The young star in Champagne is Alexandre Chartogne. He took over his father’s champagne house Chartogne-Taillet and turned it into one of the most desired companies among sommeliers of the best restaurants in the world.

Rock star or not, Alex remains grounded and unquestionably erudite. To him, the decision to make single-vineyard Champagnes was a matter of education, of trying to understand through the medium of the wine the character of the land in all its intricate, natural details, much as Cistercian monks did in France centuries ago.

He continues to hone and fine-tune his approach in the cellar. We’ve followed the single-vineyard cuvées since the beginning and have been witness to their ever-increasing refinement in recent releases, a testament to Alex’s special touch. His champagnes have now become more expressive and effortless, their ripe fruit supported by greater tension and precision.

Every new release from Champagne Chartogne-Taillet is an occasion worth celebrating. This latest collection sees the addition of two more single-parcel cuvées, Les Couarres and Heurtebise, each an engaging treatise on its own sliver of Merfy’s fascinating terroir. Alex Chartogne’s champagnes are always incredibly vibrant and vinous; compelling, and highly coveted. We’re super excited that they’re now here. Don’t miss them.

chartogne-taillet_les_couarres

Les Couarres Brut (2015)
S$ 133 / 750 ml
48 bottles
100% Pinot Noir. Les Couarres, planted as far back as 1970, lies directly adjacent to Couarres Château, yet the soils are completely different: there’s about a metre of calcareous sand in Les Couarres, and then a deep layer of clay. The Les Couarres vineyard is situated in the centre of the Merfy terroir, in the least well-draining area of the village and which possesses an ability to maintain a level of moisture that avoids water deficiencies for the vines planted in this lieu-dit. Dosage: 6 g/L.

“The 2015 Les Couarres (Pinot Noir), is ample, creamy and wonderfully expressive. The natural breadth of Pinot comes through beautifully. Vinification in oak brings out striking vinous intensity in the red plum, spice, leather and crushed flower flavors. Although the 2015 has plenty of depth to age, it is incredibly appealing now.” AG 93

chartogne-taillet_Heurtebise_bdb

Heurtebise Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut (2016)
S$ 133 / 750 ml
48 bottles
100% Chardonnay. The vines in the Heurtes Bises vineyard were planted as far back as 1972, in sandstone soils that are less permeable than the neighbouring chalk or "Tuf" soils. This impacts the vines, which adapt to excess water or dryness. Heurtebise is, as its name suggests, a plot located on a windy plateau, set on a very gentle slope. The wine is aged in old Burgundy barrels between 9-18 months, then later on its lees for 36 months. Dosage is 5 g/L.

“The 2016 Heurtebise, 100% Chardonnay, is stunning. Vinification in slightly larger 350-liter barrels suits this wine so well, as the wood adds texture but while allowing all of the translucency and energy of Chardonnay to come through. Lemon confit, crushed rocks, white flowers, white pepper and mint add a brilliant upper register. Over the last few years, Heurtebise has become one of the most coveted grower Champagnes, its small production disappearing quietly in the blink of an eye. The 2016 is a great example of why.” AG 95

chartogne-taillet_les_orizeaux

Les Orizeaux Extra Brut (2015)
S$ 137 / 750 ml for 3-bottles or more
S$ 144 / 750 ml
72 bottles
100% Pinot Noir. Les Orizeaux is a parcel that is notably more calcareous than Les Barres, although its topsoils are still sandy. Chartogne's vines here were planted in 1961, and while they are grafted, their roots extend over four metres into the soil. Les Orizeaux is aged in old oak casks of Burgundian origin. Dosage: 3 g/L (extra-brut).

“The 2015 Extra Brut Les Orizeaux (Pinot Noir) is brighter and more intensely saline than the Couarres tasted alongside it. Pinot bristles with real tension and cut in the Orizeaux. Crushed rocks, slate, mint, sweet red cherry and tobacco abound, but it is the wine’s translucence and vibrancy that make it so beguiling. Alexandre Chartogne nailed the 2015. Don’t miss it.” AG 94

chartogne-taillet_les_barres_ungrafted_meunier

Les Barres Extra Brut (2015)
S$ 165 / 750 ml
48 bottles
100% Pinot Meunier from a parcel of ungrafted vines in the vineyard of Les Barres, situated on the village's most well-draining soils. These southwest facing vines were never touched by phylloxera, thanks to the sandy soils atop of Campanian chalk in this section of Merfy. There are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay planted too but the oldest vines are Meunier, which date back to 1970. In 2006, Alexandre Chartogne bottled this pure meunier for the first time, yielding 1,900 bottles. The wine is aged entirely in old Burgundy barrels with an elevated oxygen exchange. Alex believes this promotes the wine’s mineralisation, which slowly makes the varietal aromas disappear in favour of saltiness.
