Champagne
Ruppert-Leroy
(Aube, Champagne) |
|

Bénédicte and Emmanuel Leroy’s grapes come
from tiny plots in Essoyes in the Aube
Valley, which shares more similarities with
Burgundy than with the ‘traditional’
Champagne microclimate in the Marne valley
further north. Farmed biodynamically, the
grapes go through a natural winemaking
process. All of their cuvées are made
following a similar process, in order to
highlight their individual site
characteristics. Bottled without dosage,
these champagnes are masterfully balanced.
Most of all, they are oh-so-easy to drink. These
are magical, vibrant expressions of
Champagne. They have stolen our hearts
with their elegance, energy, and pure
class. |

Fosse-Grely
Brut Nature 2017 |
S$
96 / 750 ML
|
“Understated and
elegant on the nose, melding
tangerine, pear, peach and lime
blossom. Quite expansive in the
mouth, featuring saline-inflected
citrus and berry fruits that stain
the palate. There is a lovely
roundness in the minerality-laden
finish. Dry but not austere. In
fact, charming and infinitely
versatile.” AC |
|

80%
Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. Elevage
in tank sur lie for 6 months, then 2
years in bottle ‘sur lattes’.
No dosage and no added sulphur.

|
|
Les Cognaux
Brut Nature 2017 |
S$
96 / 750 ML
|
“A vivacious one! On
the nose: cherry, raspberry, white
flowers and orange peel. Opens up
quite pervasively in the mouth, with
crushed red fruits and tangy stone
fruits complicated by a suggestion
of almond curd. Wonderfully
constituted and talk about
palate-staining flavours! Lovely
berry finish that elongates and
resonates long after. Delicious.” AC |
|

100%
Pinot Noir from Les Cognaux, a
0.7-ha vineyard. Elevage in tank sur
lie for 6 months, then 2 years in
bottle ‘sur lattes’. No dosage and

Domaine
des Marnes Blanches
(Sud Revermont, Jura) |
|

Sud Revermont has become a hotbed for Jura’s
most acclaimed talents, and it’s
here that Géraud and Pauline Fromont are
making some of the most talked-about Jura
wines right now. Theirs are high-energy,
crystalline wines brimming with absolute
class and a special eloquence. Your first
taste of Domaine des Marnes Blanches wines
might well become one of your most
memorable experiences. And if you
consider yourself a neophyte, beware —
because once you drink Marnes Blanches as
your gateway wine into Jura, there is
every chance they will be your new
obsession. Sumptuous, exquisite and
emotionally thrilling, at this level of
artistry, we’re stunned at how undervalued
they (still) are.

Côtes du Jura,
“En Quatre Vis” Savagnin (white)
2018 |
S$
62 / 750 ML
|
“This Savagnin seduces
with its spontaneity and purity -
the nose is floral, with notes of
lime blossom and the palate is
carried by a beautiful tension. The
length is there and suggests
cellaring upside over the next 5-10
years. A fine natural wine from the
Jura to be enjoyed with characterful
cheese or fish dishes, for example
with sushi.” Vinibee |
|

100%
Savagnin from Cesancey planted in
1958. Direct press before
fermentation, followed by 11 months
ageing in 225-litre old oak barrels.

|
Côtes du Jura,
Trousseau (red)
2018 |
S$
69 / 750 ML
|
“An airy, pure and
vibrant Trousseau. The vines are 40
years old. The vinification is done
in whole bunches with little
extraction, followed by a 10-month
aging in weathered barrels. What
pleasure to taste! This Jura wine
with a very clear colour has an airy
character, low in alcohol and full
of elegance. The palate is delicious
and fruity, supported by spicy
notes, a beautiful mineral structure
and discreet tannins.” Vinibee |
|

100%
Trousseau from Vincelles and Sainte
Agnès.100% whole-bunch fermentation
for 10 days in stainless steel
tanks. No SO2 added. |

Château
Lestignac/Hors Les Murs
(Bergerac, Southwest France) |
|

About an hour and a half due east of
Bordeaux in southwest France, a visionary
young couple — Mathias and Camille Marquet —
has been changing people’s perceptions about
Bergerac, with wines that are profound yet
incredibly lively. Like their makers,
Lestignac wines display an irrepressible
personality, always exuberant and full of
youthful fun, while never straying away from
terroir precision. In short: just darn good
wholesome wines. Expect electric, salivating
whites and tensile, perfumed reds.

|
Blanc XVII VdF
(white)
2017 |
S$
56 / 750 ML
|
“2017 has the class for
making great dry Semillon.
Paradoxically, the short growing
cycle of the vintage, as a result of
the ravages of frost, has benefited
the variety, producing grapes of a
wonderful density, and yet
altogether avoiding heaviness.
Voluptuous, ripe, salivating and
sharp.” Winemakers |
|

90%
Semillon, 10% Sauvignon Blanc.18
months of fermentation in barrels,
followed by 6 months of maturation
in concrete vats. |
|
|
“De l’Aube à
l’Aube” VdF (red) 2017 |
S$
49 / 750 ML
|
“Pretty fragrance with
lifted florality, replete with
crushed red berries, greets the
nose. Berry-fruited in the mouth
with bright specks of salinity; the
uncanny mix of succulent red fruit
and mouthwatering sappiness is
irresistible. Finishes with a
rose-like fragrance in the mouth.
This wine deserves to be drunk with
abandon. We figure it’ll be too easy
to down bottles of this in the
course of the evening. What a joyful
wine!” AC |
|

Under
the Hors Les Murs label. 50%
Sauvignon Blanc, 50% Merlot. The two
wines were blended in November just
after crushing, then aged in
concrete vats. |

Domaine
Le Briseau
(Coteaux du Loir, Loire Valley) |
|

Founded in 2002 by Christian Chaussard and
Nathalie Gaubicher, Domaine Le Briseau very
quickly became a standard-bearer for the
first wave of natural wine estates in the
Loire. Though Christian has sadly passed on,
Nathalie and Émile Hérédia continue to
nurture the original spirit behind the
domaine, seeking to make pure wines that
everybody can enjoy. Expect bone-dry
Chenin at its most floral and honeyed, and
delicate Pineau d’Aunis at its most
exotically spiced — each delivered in a
welcomingly affordable package, despite
their celebrated status. |
|
Kharaktêr VdF
(white)
2018 |
S$
66 / 750 ML
|
“High-toned citrus nose
with a marked flintiness, which
slowly opens up to reveal the
telltale white flowers and honey.
Intensely focused and chalky, it
feels like liquid minerals in the
mouth. Gently but persistently
perfumed. Crisp but layered and
constantly evolving, culminating in
a mouthwatering and highly elevated
finish. Thrilling juice.” AC |
|

65 years
old Chenin Blanc located in
Jasnières. Direct-pressed, followed
by cold debourbage for 24 hours and
cold fermentation for 2 months. Aged
in tank for 9 months. SO2 addition

“A touch of animal,
sage, nutmeg, atop red currant.
Crisp dark fruit on the palate, yet
light-footed. A soft tannic grip on
the finish, featuring pepper, dried
herbs and savouriness. An easygoing
wine; this will be match an endless
array of dishes. Ever-changing in
the glass too, suggesting cellaring
potential.” AC |

Fattoria
Al Fiore
(Miyagi, Japan)
|
|

Hirotaka Meguro was once a renowned chef
of Italian cuisine. He had never worked in
a vineyard, nor studied winemaking before.
But he had a deep desire to champion the
surrounding rural community that he had
grown to love. With this aim in mind, he
decided to start a farm, and began by
revitalising abandoned parcels of land in
Miyagi prefecture.“Nothing but grapes
and love,” says Al Fiore’s
label. Hiro’s wife Reina says that for them
both, the most important thing about making
wine is to have fun. The team simply
vinifies the grapes they receive each year
in as non-interventionist a way as possible,
and let the wine be “free”. Indeed, these
wines express the ethos of their makers with
a disarming charm. And most importantly,
they’re downright delicious. |

This is a really accomplished light
red wine, broad and gentle, with an
appetising umami-esque finish.
Rather stylish and zen.” AC |
