I’m running
out of adjectives regarding the magnificent wines
from Domaine Sylvain Cathiard.
– Steen Öhman
These are gloriously silky smooth,
complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus
but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity
and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with
supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate
like a beautiful courtesan.
– Neil Martin
There is a touch of genius here in the
winemaking, resulting in bottles of exceptional
purity and fragrance: Pinot Noir at its most
elegant.
– Clive Coates

A certain famous Burgundy critic once
emphatically stated, “There is no one hotter in
Burgundy these days than Sylvain Cathiard.”
And now, with Sylvain's prodigiously gifted son
Sébastien at the helm, the Domaine’s elevated
reputation has never been more of a matter of fact.
|
The quality associated with the Domaine Sylvain
Cathiard label is the result of an unwavering
dedication to fundamentals. Since Sébastien took over, the
viticulture has become more organic-centric although the
domaine eschews seeking certification. Vinification seems
unchanged at a glance — 100% destemming remains — but over
the years, Sébastien has lowered the use of new oak and
adjusted to a lower toast to preserve greater purity of
fruit. All of these changes are rather understated but, in
the hands of this sensitive young vigneron, the superior
results are indisputable.

With Domaine Cathiard’s wines, we are entering a realm
where one is no longer measuring excellence but indulging
in the rarefied art of vinous seduction. Sébastien
Cathiard is indeed a vigneron in a class of his own.
Whether it’s the plaudits received from various wine
writers or the perpetual excitement amongst die-hard
Burgundy fans, there is no doubt that this is a superstar
Vosne-Romanée cellar to follow.
Today we are pleased to present
Domaine Sylvain Cathiard’s most celebrated wines –
including the monumental Vosne-Romanée
Aux Malconsorts, and the otherworldly
Romanée-Saint-Vivant.
And if that’s not enough, we’ve got a real treat for
you in the form of a few ultra-limited magnums.

These precious bottles and magnums were received directly
from the domaine and have since rested in place, stored
carefully and continuously at optimal cellar conditions.

| Chambolle-Musigny
“Les Clos de l’Orme” 2015 |
S$ 320 / 750 ML
|
|
“...very vibrant and juicy and in that way
overshadowing the Vosne-Romanée village. The
bouquet is forward and vibrant with a lovely
delicate red fruit – fresh and defined. On
the palate very refined and precise – a
single terroir wine in the glass – ... a
truly delightful glass.” Steen Öhman
“The palate is medium-bodied with fine,
slightly grainy tannin. There is a slight
reduction here, but it dissipates and
there is wonderful freshness and precision
here. Superb, especially for a “mere”
village cru.” Neil Martin

| Nuits-Saint-Georges
1er Cru “Aux Murgers” 2016 |
S$ 400 / 750 ML
|
| From a 0.47 ha parcel
of 65+ year old vines |
“Unaffected by the frost in 2016, unlike the
southern side of Nuits, this comes from a
70-year-old parcel close to Vosne. It
provides further evidence of a shift in
style chez Cathiard, with grace and
precision, fine tannins and sweet, juicy
raspberry and wild strawberry fruit. The 60%
new wood is expertly handled.” TA 96

| Nuits-Saint-Georges
1er Cru “Aux Murgers” 2015 |
S$ 420 / 750 ML
|
“The 2015 Nuits Saint Georges
1er Cru Aux Murgers has a more expressive
bouquet than the Aux Thorey, essentially
demonstrating more Pinoté and terroir
expression. The palate is showing a little
more oakiness at the moment, although there
is sufficient fruit to soak that up in time.
There is good depth here, a suppleness to
the texture with candied orange peel and a
touch of cassis towards the caressing
finish. Whilst the Aux Thorey is more
immediately pleasurable, the Aux Murgers
conveys the propitious manner of this
vineyard, and has greater long-term
potential.” NM 93-95

| Vosne-Romanée
1er Cru “Aux Malconsorts” 2014 |
S$ 900 / 750 ML
S$ 2,150 / 1,500 ML – MAGNUM
|
From a 0.74 ha
parcel of 35+ year old vines.
|
“Interestingly, this is aromatically quite
similar to the Reignots but there is an even
broader range of spice elements. Otherwise
there is first-rate vibrancy to the big,
intense, powerful and muscular flavors that
are almost pungently mineral. As is usually
the case with this wine chez Cathiard it is
robust and exceptionally firm yet there is
nothing aggressive about the structure on
the ripe and hugely long finale; indeed this
is notably less youthfully austere than
usual. As the description would suggest
however it is pointless to open one of these
beauties before it has at least 10 years of
age. In a word, brilliant.” BH 95 |
|
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Aux Malconsorts” 2012 |
| S$ 1,100 / 750 ML
|
| “The 2012 Vosne-Romanée Les
Malconsorts is clearly built for the cellar.
Explosive and full-bodied, the 2012 hits the
palate with massive fruit and structure.
There is plenty of intensity in the glass,
but the Malconsorts is not yet fully formed
because of its late malos. A recent bottle
of the 1993 was truly spectacular. The 2012
has the potential to be as thrilling, if not
better.” AG 94-96+ |
|
Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Aux Malconsorts” 2010 |
| S$ 1,400 / 750 ML
|
| “Good deep, bright red.
Knockout nose combines liqueur-like red
fruits, minerals, coffee and smoky, spicy,
nutty oak. Sappy and suave, saturating every
square millimeter of the mouth with berry,
mineral and Oriental spice flavors framed by
harmonious acidity. Still a bit youthfully
aggressive today, finishing with firm,
building tannins and explosive rising
length. Offers a near-perfect fruit/mineral
balance. This has the size of a grand cru
and really calls for eight to ten years of
cellaring.” ST 94+ |

| Romanée-Saint-Vivant
Grand Cru 2014 |
S$ 2,600 / 750 ML
|
From a tiny 0.18
ha parcel. Less than the
equivalent of 800 bottles
produced.
|
“The 2014 Romanée St Vivant Grand Cru,
matured in two-thirds new oak, has an
incredibly powerful and pure bouquet that
already possesses dizzying, seductive
intensity. Wow. The palate has a satin-like
texture, perfect acidity and filigree
tannin. However, it is the purity of this
wine and the shimmering tension on the
finish that is totally entrancing. One of
the wines of the vintage? Most certainly.
Bravo Sebastien.” NM 96-98 |
