BURGUNDY NEW ARRIVALS
Chapuis Frères
Pristine, irresistible Burgundy built for sheer pleasure
Romain_Chapuis
Romain Chapuis of Chapuis Frères

Chapuis Frères is a team of two brothers, Romain and Jean-Guillaume, who were raised in Aloxe-Corton. The brothers produced their first wines in 2009 from their tiny cellar in Pommard, releasing four cuvées spread across just seventeen barrels.

Taking the lead in the vineyard and the cellar is Romain Chapuis, a progressive next-generation vigneron who crafts highly delectable Burgundies in both colours.

Romain has always loved wines and knew from a young age that he wanted to be a winemaker. In his younger days, he travelled extensively, in particular to Lebanon, Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia, to learn to make wine. A few years later, Romain returned to Burgundy and came under the tutelage of natural wine superstar Philippe Pacalet, who himself was educated by his uncle Marcel Lapierre (one of the most revered Beaujolais producers) and Jules Chauvet (the founding father of the French natural wine movement).

Jean-Guillaume_and_Romain_Chapuis_(photo:_Marie_Protet)After founding Chapuis Frères, Romain and Jean-Guillaume had just enough capital remaining for 0.8 hectares of vines. (This has grown slightly over the years whenever suitable plots have become available, but the opportunities have remained few and far in between. This is Burgundy, after all.) To augment and grow their portfolio, the Chapuis brothers rely on a network of like-minded growers who work organically. They select their sources with utmost care and attention to grape soundness, soil type and vine age.

Chapuis Frères encapsulates Romain’s ethos — organic viticulture and non-interventionist winemaking — which results in extremely pure and delectable Burgundy wines that transcend their appellations.

In the cellar, Romain favours gentle vinification methods and minimal intervention. This means direct pressing, vinification and ageing in barrels for the whites with next to no SO2 added (if at all), and whole-bunch maceration and fermentation for the reds, with a similarly homeopathic approach to sulphur addition. Use of new oak is very limited, and is driven more by the replacement of overly ancient barrels rather than any prescribed regime.

While he adores making charming wines high in drinkability quotient, Romain is intolerant of any kind of winemaking fault. In keeping to his exacting standards, he has been known to get rid of entire barrels of wine that had exhibited even the slightest hint of fault.

With their vibrant and non-conformist label designs, it may be convenient to put Chapuis’ wines into the ‘natural wine’ category. But when we taste them, we always feel his wines are beyond this categorisation. When asked how he feels about his wines being labeled as natural wines, Romain pondered for a while before replying, “Frankly, the only ‘definition’ I’m comfortable with is that I’m making honest wines. Every time I make a wine, I ask myself: Is this wine true to its origin? Is it pure? Is it something people will enjoy? I don’t like to be restricted by any dogma that stifles my conscience and prevents me from making a good wine. Yes, I want to intervene as little as possible, but more importantly, I want my wine to be right.”

Romain_Chapuis

As a born and bred Burgundian, despite his unwavering commitment to making pure wines, Romain remains staunchly respectful of appellation rules. This is why we don’t find a Vin de France from his cellar: each wine reflects its origin, in taste and in name.

Honest wines.

What a way to put it, and we agree with Romain wholeheartedly. The dichotomy between ‘natural’ and ‘classical’ wine has been unhelpful to both the winemaker and the wine consumer, simply because it adds no value to the choices each makes in relation to the quality of the wine. Philosophy matters, but so does taste, and through his wines, Romain makes a compelling case that both can happily coexist. And he does so with such effortlessness.

The wines of Chapuis Frères are juicy, transparent and possess tremendous vinosity. Working with humbler Burgundian appellations, Romain elevates each of them with his thoughtful approach. The phrase “accessible Burgundy” is fast becoming a contradiction in terms, but here at Chapuis Frères, Romain proves it can still be true: each wine always tastes far more sophisticated than its price tag would suggest.

Vintage 2018 and 2019 have been back-to-back banner years at Chapuis Frères. Romain nailed them across all colours, crafting supremely elegant wines that are almost contemplative in their beauty; wines that are calm yet authoritative in their flavour definitions. These are serious Burgundies of profound depth, complexity and intensity, and they are simply irresistible to drink. And they are now in stock.

For the first time, we will be offering wines that come from the domaine’s own vineyards, from a mix of appellations spanning from Aloxe-Corton to Savigny and Chorey-les-Beaune, in addition to perennial favourites Coteaux Bourguignons, Hautes-Côtes and the stunning Bourgogne Aligoté. Don’t miss these understated gems.

This offer is valid until 9 December 2020. Orders will be processed subject to remaining availability and final written confirmation. Full payment is required no later than 7 days after confirmation invoice is sent in order to confirm the purchase. All terms and conditions apply.

“Uplifting pure lemon zest and iodine aroma on the nose leads to a lively citrus-infused entry that’s full of stony minerals. A little salinity, a touch of mandarin orange, a smooth creaminess — they all add up to this unusually finessed example of a grape that’s quickly captivating the attention of burgundy lovers everywhere. This is a superbly affordable and worthwhile example. A fantastic aperitif and all-purpose fine Burgundy white.” AC

“A minor touch of reduction, which gives way to a full and serious, rather complex classic white Burgundy nose after swirling. On the palate it is plush but lifted, with a lovely mandarin peel and honey accent. Builds in its volume and puts on layers of minerality the longer you let it breathe. This is an overachiever in every way. Impressive.” AC

“A bright lime and citrus nose with hints of cut grass and creme fraiche. Enters the palate with a lithe elegance and sense of purpose, full of energy. Finishes with a blooming sappiness that fills the backend, framed with a superb minerality. All things considered, a special achievement in a supposedly easy-going vintage. Solid stuff, so elegant.” AC

“Pale, clear red. Raspberry coulis, soft plums, and a hint of pepper and cinnamon on the nose. Initially reticent, it gradually opens up as the red fruit gains flesh with oxygen contact. Finishes high-toned and framed by soft, gently spreading tannins.” AC

“A smokier, peppery nose, underpinned by lush redcurrants and plums. The fruit profile on the palate is a little darker. Textured and plush, this is a rich, generous wine with viscosity but also vibrancy. Serious juice.” AC

Hautes-Côtes de Beaune (rouge) 2019

From 3 plots of vines which are on average 45 years old. Whole-cluster fermentation with 8 days of maceration followed by 6 months aging in old barrels. No SO2 added.
“Slightly translucent deep ruby. Highly perfumed — floral essence of Pinot. There is perceptible depth and complexity even just judging on the nose alone. Crunchy, juicy red berry on the palate, framed with a delicate minerality. Finishing with a rousing and salivating pinosité. A fantastic showing for its level.” AC

Savigny-les-Beaune 2018
S$ 70 / 750 ml for 3-bottles or more
S$ 73 / 750 ml

Domaine fruits. From two plots of around 40 years of age. 14 days whole-bunch maceration, followed by 12 months of aging in 15% new barrels. About 2 g/hl SO2 added. 2,883 bottles produced.
“High-toned aromatics despite obvious strength of concentration here: currants then some flower petals emerging later. A silky entry, textured, with impressive sweetness. Some stalky elements add interest to the inner mouth perfume. This will be fascinating to track after some cellaring. A fine and almost contemplative Savigny.” AC
Chapuis_Aloxe-Corton_1er_Cru_2018

Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru 2018
S$ 102 / 750 ml
36 bottles
Domaine fruit. From 53-year-old vines. 16 days whole-bunch maceration. Aged for 12 months in 50% new barrels. Addition of 2 g/hl of SO2 after malolactic. 519 bottles and 36 magnums produced.
“Slight purple-red but with a lovely translucency. A complex but understated nose of raspberry, cherry plus a hint of truffle; some underlying floral notes too. Broad, plush and velvety in the mouth. A wine of superb definition and multilayered complexity but just a little shy now. The finesse is really quite remarkable. Another fine example that shows this appellation is well worth looking out for these days.” AC
