If you’re feeling a certain sense of déjà vu,
there’s a good reason for that. We did indeed
present to you last month the wines of Domaine de la Cras: a set
of the domaine’s library 2017s, plus some recently
released 2018s and 2019s. Today we complete the
portfolio with wines from our latest shipment —
the domaine’s 2018 top cuvées (which saw a spring
release): the Montre Cul and the Cras
Monopole in both colours.

(For those of you who wish to revisit the story
behind Marc Soyard’s extraordinary talent and his
special, singular Domaine de la Cras, click here to read it in our July mailer.)
So, just how good are Marc’s 2018s? Last November, we
visited his cellar at Domaine de la Cras to taste his 2018
wines from the barrel. As we departed nigh on two hours
later, it was nearly impossible for us to contain our
excitement.
The wines were astonishing: incredible definition,
ethereal aromatics and penetrating sweetness were all
delivered with absolute class. Judging these wines solely
by their appellation level would be a mistake, pure and
simple. His wines are a reminder that not all Bourgognes
are alike and his may as well have come from a different
planet. Such is Soyard’s mastery of his craft and the
delight of his vinous sorcery. We, as wine lovers, can
only be grateful.

Marc Soyard’s 2018s are brilliant milestones in the
ascent of this rising superstar. Soyard is one of
the Côte d’Or’s most exciting young vignerons, one
who is rapidly developing a cult following. This is
an extraordinary collection of burgundies that
simply should not be missed. They are so good that
we absolutely could not wait to share them with you.
This is why we immediately jumped at the opportunity
to ship these beauties in as soon as they were
released.

Marc has truly outdone himself, and he continues to
redefine perceptions of what is possible from this
northern Dijonnais terroir. To say that the wines were
thrilling is an understatement. They are hands-down the
most remarkable collection that he has produced to date.

“Cras – Monopole”
Bourgogne Blanc 2018 |
S$ 90
/ 750 ml for 3-bottles or more
S$ 95 / 750 ml
|
Biodynamic. 100%
Chardonnay from Le Grand Bessy
vineyard planted in 1983.
Clay-limestone with marl subsoil.
Manually harvested with sorting done
at the vine. Pressed into barrel in
an old vertical press. Native
fermentation and malo in barrel.
15-18 months in barrel (15% new). No
racking, fining or filtering. A
homeopathic (1 g/HL) dose of SO2
added only just prior to bottling.
4,394 bottles produced. |
“A big step up from the highly delectable
Bourgogne Blanc, at once more high-toned and
exotic on the nose and more
palate-saturating in the mouth. Ripe orchard
fruit, young pineapple with hint of sweet
oak-spice lead to a complex set of flavours
and a minerally charged palate. The fruits
and salinity leave the tongue stained with
flavours long after the wine leaves the
mouth. This beautifully ripened wine is held
together by an uncanny high-voltage energy.
A dynamic juice and a stunning achievement
for the vintage and appellation.” AC

“Montre
Cul” Bourgogne 2018 |
S$ 82
/ 750 ml for 3-bottles or more
S$ 87 / 750 ml
|
The grapes come from
a section named Montre-Cul, a 4-ha
plot which is one of the last
remaining parcels within the city
limits of Dijon. Soyard’s small
parcel of vines can be found at the
steepest part near the top. Only
natural yeast is used during
fermentation. No racking, fining, or
filtering. A homeopathic (1 g/HL)
dose of SO2 added only just prior to
bottling. |
“High-toned fragrance with a whiff of classy
new oak framing charming red-inflected
fruits on the nose. Compared to the more
candid style of the previous year, this
feels more accomplished and self-assured,
filling up the mouth with a penetrating
juiciness and culminating in a mouthwatering
finish. Don’t let the cheeky label fool you.
Fun as it is, this is a serious juice that
will surprise on the upside if cellared
properly although, frankly, it’ll be hard to
stop at just a few glasses with this wine.”
AC
Note:
The 2018 label says “Montre Luc” instead
of Montre Cul, its rightful name. This
is not a mistake. Due to administrative
oversight, the domaine was late in
filing an update of its ownership of the
vineyard. This, by law, disallows it
from citing the actual name of the
vineyard on the label. Marc decided to
play with the words by printing ‘cul’
backwards, hence this one-off name. Marc
has also changed his label printer
(hence a slightly different shade of
blue for the colour of the label) as
well as the bottle type this vintage,
switching over to the broader-shaped
version reserved for his top wines.

“Cras – Monopole”
Bourgogne Rouge 2018 |
S$ 93
/ 750 ml for 3-bottles or more
S$ 98 / 750 ml
|
Biodynamic. 100%
Pinot Noir from Le Grand Bessy
vineyard planted in 1983.
Clay-limestone with marl subsoil.
Manually harvested with sorting done
at the vine. Pressed into barrel in
an old vertical press and fermented
with whole clusters intact. 15-18
months in barrel (50% new). A
homeopathic (1 g/HL) dose of SO2
added only just prior to bottling.
3,252 bottles produced. |
“Soaring aromatics – spices, flowers, sweet
berry fruits intermingle to create a
sensational multi-layered bouquet. The entry
is ripe but stunningly fresh, with
nectareous dark cherry essence all rolled up
into a ball of flavours that glides
effortlessly across the tongue. Airy and
voluminous, the wine repeats the sweet
fragrance in the inner mouth. A touch of new
oak lends polish and class to the wine.
Finishes long with sweet but cool fruits,
all weightless and seamless. This is a
wondrous burgundy – regardless of cru level
– and a towering testament to the
specialness of the Dijonnais’ Cras terroir.”
