If there
is one commune in the Côte de Nuits that’s been
garnering special attention from Burgundy
aficionados in recent years, it has to be Nuits-Saint-Georges.
|
Vosne-Romanée may well be the crown jewel of the Côte, but ‘Nuits’
(as Nuits-Saint-Georges is sometimes referred to by wine
lovers) has benefited significantly from Vosne’s glories as
well. The fact that many of Vosne’s famed vineyards share
borders with their cousins in Nuits, and also that many top
Vosne-Romanée domaines own vineyards there too, may be part
of the reason why there has been a resurgence of top quality
Nuits in recent years. These Vosne-based producers, amongst
others, are bringing some of their style to these terroirs,
resulting in the emergence of especially finessed examples
of Nuits wines that are causing seasoned Burgheads to take a
second look.
Multiple tastings have shown us that the renewed ardour for
these contemporary Nuits-Saint-Georges wines is indeed
warranted. Many examples rival their Vosne-Romanée cousins
in terms of quality and allure, yet are still available at a
more affordable price. In years past, Nuits wine was
considered to be earthy, sturdy and robust. If this is the
impression you have, you may safely discard it today.
Contemporary Nuits wines, as the following examples will
prove, are characterised by an attractive plushness,
refinement and expressiveness.
 Edouard
Confuron from Domaine
Confuron-Gindre in Vosne-Romanée is a young vigneron
to watch. Gifted with a sensitive touch, Edouard crafts
exquisitely generous wines from his family holdings in
Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echezeaux and Nuits-Saint-Georges. His
Nuits village that we feature today is every bit as great as
his Vosne, and perhaps even more accessible and immediately
expressive. It’s a wine that affirms not only Edouard’s
special talent as a winemaker, but also the inherent
excellence of Nuits’ terroirs.
 Domaine de Montille
requires no introduction. As the son of the late legend
Hubert de Montille, Etienne de
Montille is recognised as one of the
most dynamic and talented vignerons of his generation. In
recent years, his wines have become exceedingly fine,
charged with gorgeous aromatics and supple texture,
expressing nobility and lovely drinkability, as this Nuits-Saint-Georges
Aux St-Juliens so aptly demonstrates.
 No
Burgundy succession story is as captivating as that of Domaine
Jean Grivot. In a few short years since her return to
the domaine, Mathilde Grivot
has catapulted this veteran Vosne-Romanée address into the
realm of the greats. Suppleness of texture and finessed
fruit can now be found across the Grivot portfolio. Her Aux
Lavières proudly showcases these qualities, which have
endeared Grivot to many and turned it into one of the most
sought-after Burgundy domaines today.

intriguing bouquet that takes time to open
in the glass, offering fruit that is a
little darker and earthier than the Les

and quite sharp and pointed. A surfeit of
citrus-like freshness emerges toward the
lively finish, and hints of Moroccan spice
appear on the aftertaste. This is a sensual
and utterly seductive wine in the making.”
