After the
Zoom tasting session last Friday, we came away
charmed by Pierre-Henri
Rougeot and his wines. This gentleman is a
model of the New Burgundy man – thoughtful,
enlightened, purposeful and with a big heart. His
wines express him and his vineyards superbly. |
There have now been nine generations of Rougeots in
Meursault and four at the current address. It was
Pierre-Henri’s grandfather Hubert
Rougeot, well known as mayor of Meursault for
a quarter-century, who really developed the family’s
viticultural domaine.
Domaine Rougeot took on its current form during the
1960s and 1970s when, after taking over the domaine from his
father, Hubert proceeded to purchase vineyards in Volnay and
Pommard, while his brother bought some Meursault premier cru
Charmes and Monthelie. The vineyard holdings grew to be
their current size of 12.5 hectares, the majority of which
are located in Meursault.
Speaking about his grandfather, Pierre-Henri explains: “He
was not a winemaker, but a good grower. In addition to all
that he was also in charge of the vineyards at the Château
de Meursault, responsible for a total of 50 hectares of
vines”.
That foundational legacy was passed on to Pierre-Henri’s
father, Marc Rougeot,
who Pierre-Henri began assisting at the domaine in 2010. At
that point in time, Pierre-Henri was a sales representative
for a cooperage, a position that gave him the opportunity to
travel throughout France. He made many vigneron friends and
tasted extensively. He became smitten by the wines he tasted
in the Loire Valley. These vignerons were making supremely
expressive wines bursting with natural vibrations. When he
inquired how they did it, they just shrugged and told him
that they did almost nothing in the cellar; their main
efforts went to growing the best possible grapes.
Pierre-Henri was struck by the simplicity of the approach.
Inspired, he returned home, ready to study his own approach
to winemaking and motivated to implement change.
One of the first changes he spearheaded at the domaine was a
shift to organic viticulture. Fortunately in this regard,
Pierre-Henri’s father had never favoured the use of
chemicals much to begin with, so this made the conversion
process much less complicated. The family took their first
steps towards organic certification in 2012 and after some
trials the entire domaine became wholly organic in 2017.
In the cellar, Pierre-Henri looked into every practice the
domaine had been employing throughout the winemaking
process. Soon enough he realised that there was no real need
for most of the external agents and corrective additives.
Suddenly, he found that his way of working now aligned with
that of the vignerons he admired: no commercial yeast, no
enzymes, no acidification and working without sulphur to the
extent possible.
Pierre-Henri’s approach to vinification is the result of
meticulous reasoning and personal research, not merely of
following trends. His no-sulphur vinification effortlessly
balances a natural wine approach with traditional Burgundian
technique to create wines with energy and balance.
He prefers to press both his white and red grapes using a
modern version of an ancient vertical press. Each terroir,
from Aligoté and Passetoutgrain through to the Premier Crus,
is bottled as a single-vineyard designate. He believes that
each of the parcels, even at the regional level, has a
unique voice that is meaningful to express as its own in the
bottle.
The whites from this address are bright and crystalline,
crafted in a slightly reductive style but with minimal oak,
preserving fruit purity. They’re immediately lipsmacking
with generous fruit and crisp, saline-infused acidity.
Pierre-Henri is right: each wine is indeed distinct from the
rest — each wine has marked terroir definitions firmly
etched into it, even at the generic Bourgogne level. These
are far more sophisticated than the prices they fetch.
Like his inspiration, Lalou Bize-Leroy (whose Vosne-Romanée
Les Beaux Monts 2000 he found to be life-changing when
he tasted it in 2010), Pierre-Henri works with a high
percentage of whole bunches for his reds. He seeks to
capture as much as possible of that magical perfume that he
believes makes Burgundy wines special. Coupled with a
dramatic reduction of sulphur use in the cellar, indeed his
reds have a certain delicacy and unbound expressiveness
about them. Pierre-Henri thinks that a little cellaring
always helps with his reds, so that the stems will have time
to meld with the wine and exhibit their florality. He puts
the same care and love into making every single one of his
wines, so don’t overlook the Bourgogne and Bourgogne
Passetoutgrain: the magic actually begins right here.

We are
overjoyed to share the latest releases from
Pierre-Henri’s Domaine
Rougeot & Fils, all freshly landed and
available now. The fact that these stunning charmers
currently fly under the radar only adds to the
excitement. Take note of this domaine; we strongly
suspect it will not remain a secret for much longer.

Bourgogne Aligoté “Les Plumes” 2018
|
S$ 58
/ 750 ml
|
From 65-year-old
vines located just on the other side
of the RN in Meursault. Bottled in
May 2019 with no added sulphur.
|
“Ooh, that’s a big nose, lots of fresh apple
aroma, slowly turning to pear.
Mouth-filling, mineral, wide, vibrant
flavour. Super.” Bill Nanson
“Lovely vigorous stuff, full of elegance,
racy and delicious. Medium bodied, nicely
judged. A great start to the range.” Jasper
Morris, MW |

Bourgogne
Chardonnay “Clos des Six Ouvrées” 2017 |
S$ 62
/ 750 ml
|
40- to 45-year-old
vines planted by Pierre-Henri’s
grandfather. The smallest plot in
the domaine’s holdings. The vineyard
is considered a family ‘garden’,
lying just by the domaine building,
not far from Les Chevaliers.
|
“An inviting nose that is rich, vibrant yet
minerally. In the mouth this builds with
great concentration. Intense but not heavy,
with impressive volume. Absolutely
flavoursome and totally Meursault-esque,
with complexity that drives into a whiplash
of mouth-watering saline-inflected finish.
We are still baffled: how could this be a
mere Bourgogne?” AC

|
|
Saint-Romain
“La Combe Bazin” 2017 |
S$ 82
/ 750 ml
|
From the domaine’s
oldest vines: 90+ years old.
|
“A penetrating, citrus-laden nose with cool,
minty notes. There is depth and texture
here. The wine is lithe but intense and
energetic, delivering a mouth-watering
cascade of lemon, orange peel, stones, white
pepper all wrapped in old-viney slippery
texture, and culminating in a slender and
long finish. Understated and elegant, but
determined and complex. This is liquid
minerals.” AC |

Meursault
1er Cru “Les Charmes” 2017 |
S$ 156
/ 750 ml for 3-bottles or more
S$ 165 / 750 ml
|
65-year-old vines
from the bottom to the middle of the
vineyard.
|
“For me, ‘Les Charmes’, meaning
‘the charming’ in English has always been my
favourite. This wine is capable to provide
you emotion only by smelling it! The nose is
very powerful; the attack on your palate is
round, with a great weight and the acidity
kicks off quickly to clean your palate and
leave you a complex bouquet of flavours.
Meursault ‘Les Charmes’ is known to be
Meursault’s most elegant wine.” Pierre-Henri
Rougeot |

|
Bourgogne Passetoutgrain “Les Vercherres”
2018
|
S$ 56
/ 750 ml
|
A blend of Pinot Noir
(55%) and Gamay (45%), co-planted
and co-vinified. Aged in demi-muids.
Bottled without any sulphur added.
|
“Bottled without sulphur. A fine deep purple
in colour. The first nose is absolutely
ravishing but there is a touch of animal
just below the surface. Gorgeous fruit on
the palate, I would be happy to gulp this
down by the bowlful.” Jasper Morris,
MW
“. . a very forward and attractive nose –
very fruity and impressively pure. Supple,
but dances over the palate. Plenty of depth
to this flavour – completely delicious
almost graphite finishing!” Bill
Nanson |

Bourgogne
Pinot Noir “Les Lameroses” 2017 |
S$ 68
/ 750 ml
|
Les Lameroses is
located in the northern part of
Meursault below the village of
Volnay. This cuvée is made from the
rare and sensitive Pinot Fin
variety, considered to be the finest
of the various clones of pinot noir
in Burgundy.
|
“Translucent ruby, really pretty colour, and
what a pristine, floral whole-bunch nose.
While this may not have the exuberance of
the Les Vercherres, it is a step up
in purity and finesse. Really vibrant,
lovely fruit here, delicate, elegant and
quite supple, complicated by notes of gentle
spices. An intricate and rather complex wine
beyond the generic level that the label
indicates. Don’t miss this.” AC

|
|
|
Volnay 1er Cru “Les Santenots” 2017
|
S$ 155
/ 750 ml
|
From Les Santenots
Dessous section of the family
domaine’s holdings, situated below
Domaine Leroy’s and next to the
Hospices parcels. This was bottled
under Pierre-Henri’s own négoce
label, although the fruits are
wholly sourced from his family
domaine.
|
[2016 vintage:]
“. . a purist wine – very
organic with a very refined expressive style
and focus. It’s delicate in the best sense
of the word . . with almost sensual and
detailed red fruit. The Santenots terroir
can make such elegant wines and this is one
of the best examples I have tasted . . it’s
forward, silky and airy but with a very
defined mineral framework to focus the wine
– a limestone fist in a velvet glove.” WH
