|
Pascal Marchand
|
|
|
 |
. .
definitely a Burgundian winemaker to watch.
— Jane Faulkner, THE AGE
Style-wise the wines are elegant, charming,
forward and quite silky, with a lovely display of
terroir and appellation. In other words, wines with
a lovely display of fruit – and a lovely
drinkability.
—
Steen Öhman, WINEHOG
I’m a big fan of Pascal Marchand and his team’s work
– every year there are quite a few gems outside of
the quality that I expect from the grand crus.
— Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report |

The documentary film “Grand Cru”
chronicles the career and a season with Pascal Marchand, who was an
aspiring poet from Montreal when he first arrived in
the mythical land of Burgundy to work the harvest at
age 21. Enchanted by the region, he settled there
and embarked on an unlikely path to winemaking
stardom. Now, over 30 years later, he is renowned as
an artist and innovator, finding his inspiration in
the ancient techniques of the Cistercian monks who
meticulously studied and refined Burgundy’s
winemaking in the middle ages. |
The name Pascal Marchand is synonymous with the resurrection
of Domaine Comte Armand in the 1990s. As a Quebec native,
Pascal was, on paper, an outsider in Burgundy when he first
came to the region in the 1980s. His bright talent, however,
quickly saw him at the helm of this historic domaine, to
revive its flailing reputation. After leading Comte Armand’s
renown to an unprecedented high, he moved on and
reinvigorated Domaine de la Vougeraie before eventually
striking out on his own, beginning with the inception of his
micro-négoce in 2006. Thus what is now known as DOMAINE TAWSE and MARCHAND-TAWSE was born.
Blessed with an instinctive understanding of the region’s
unique terroirs as well as being an intelligent, sensitive
cellar-master, Pascal regularly coaxes out the purest and
most captivating expressions of Burgundy with ease and
panache. Today, Marchand continues to dedicate most of his
time to what he considers to be the most important aspect of
the production of great wines: working the vineyard.
As one of the earliest proponents of organic/biodynamic
farming in Burgundy, Pascal began practicing organic
viticulture in the mid-1980s at Domaine Comte Armand. His
reputation earned him many friends who own prestigious
vineyards around Burgundy, from whom now he sources fruits
to augment his domaine’s vineyards. He is also exceptionally
influential, successfully persuading many of these growers
to convert to organic practices over the years. He believes
organic viticulture is the foundation for purity of terroir
expression. Today, over 80% of his fruits are either organic
or biodynamic, including those he sources from his grower
friends. There is simply no “négoce” as committed to
perfection in viticulture as Marchand.
With the acquisition of Domaine Maume in Gevrey-Chambertin
as well as additional purchases of other choice parcels,
Pascal's operation now works with a majority of owned
vineyards. These are labeled as “Domaine Tawse”.

Pascal Marchand’s approach straddles the fine line between
tradition and innovation, a concept that is both Old World
and New World in origin. Pascal seeks to express terroir
like the true Burgundian he has become over the past three
decades, while also expressing his New World roots, where
gumption, hard work and forward-thinking foster continuous
progress.
Thanks to meticulous vineyard work, Pascal can vinify gently
(to coax out wonderful aromatics) and yet obtain long,
complex flavours. As expressive as the wines may be, they
always carry a certain je-ne-sais-quoi elegance and
the gorgeous perfume that makes Burgundy lovers swoon.
Pascal has become one of the most respected personalities in
Burgundy’s steeply traditional and highly competitive wine
circles. As a friend, we have always known Pascal to be an
inquisitive and sensitive wine taster, and it is not wrong
to say that his vast tasting and collecting experience has
spurred him to constantly evolve his winemaking approach. It
is rare to find such humility and diligence, especially in a
man who’s more than made a name for himself.
We are super excited to offer today
the 2018 burgundies from one of our favourite
vignerons. Keen-eyed followers will notice that we
have added a few more “domaine wines” this time
around, although they remain small in quantity.
|
2018 marks another highly successful vintage at this
address. The wines avoid excessive alcohol levels and sport
sufficient acidity in order to showcase terroir delineation
and energetic tension. These are features found only at the
best addresses in the region. While very few tend to mention
it, the whites are especially successful this year. The
reds, as expected, deserve their accolades. Pascal’s wines
always surprise us on the upside, and we expect no less in
2018.
The offer is valid until 7 April 2020. Orders will be
processed subject to availability and final written
confirmation. Some wines have restrictive supplies, so
please understand that we may have to allocate them in order
to ensure as equitable a distribution as possible. The 2018
wines are estimated to arrive in Singapore in Q1 2021,
subject to shipper's final notice.
If you are new to this domaine, you may wish to check out
their elegantly stylish and perfumed 2017s which have landed
and are undergoing final checks by Singapore Customs in our
bonded storage right now. (See offer
details below.)
Full payment is required no later than 7 days after
confirmation invoice is sent in order to confirm the
purchase. No reservation is allowed and no further discount.

It has a very attractive and quite

this nose (today) but still, what an
attractive nose! Actually this is
remarkably mineral and fresh,
cool-fruited Fuées for the vintage –

finish is great!” Bill Nanson

“The 2018 Vosne-Romanée
Les Suchots 1er Cru is the only cru
that is 100% whole bunch this year.
It comes from a massal selection
that produces small berries in loose
bunches. It has a floral,
pressed-iris- and incense-driven
bouquet; hints of truffle come
through with aeration. The palate is
very well balanced with supple
tannins, fine acidity and layers of
pure red fruit laced with truffle
and light spicy notes. This feels
reassuringly long. A very fine Les
Suchots that will give 20 years of
drinking pleasure.” NM 92-94

Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru comes
from the namesake lieu-dit, matured
in 50% new oak with 25% whole bunch.
It has a wonderful bouquet of pure
red currant, cranberry, sous-bois
and crushed stone aromas that is
very delineated and focused. The
medium-bodied palate offers a saline
entry, superb tension and fine
weight, with a pinch of black pepper
toward the persistent finish.

“From Les Treux and Les
Rouges du Bas, it has not yet quite

purple. Tight and with some lively
acidity . . this has the quality of
fruit one hopes for from Echezeaux
with elegance and detail.” JM

Clos de la

S$

“The 2018 Clos de la
Roche Grand Cru has a very intense
bouquet of copious red cherries,
kirsch, orange blossom and blueberry
fruit, quite floral in style
although perhaps not quite
delivering the breeding of the
Clos-Saint-Denis. The palate is
succulent and rounded, the 50% new
oak nicely integrated, and shows
very good definition and persistency
on the finish. There is a lovely
crescendo here. Impressive.” NM
