There are very few domaines that make purely Gevrey-Chambertin wines. DOMAINE PIERRE DAMOY is one such domaine, and a unique one too because 80% of its holdings are in fact Grand Crus.

While many people already know that Domaine de Vogüé is the single largest owner of Musigny, it is a rarely known fact that Domaine Pierre Damoy is the single largest owner of Chambertin Clos de Bèze — it owns 45% — of this ultra-prime Grand Cru vineyard. The domaine sells a good portion of its Clos de Bèze fruits to other producers, putting Monsieur Damoy in a highly privileged position to be able to choose and keep only the grapes he is truly happy with to make his wines. It also owns about 40% of the Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru.

Pierre
DamoyPierre Damoy (pictured, right) is a bundle of energy. This is evident in the manner by which he speaks and the way by which he conducts his tasting: sprightly, methodical and ever so replete with personal, totally candid anecdotes of each wine. He told us that vintage 2009 was a dream to him; everything just happened right. Although he typically picks late to obtain optimal ripeness (which imbues his wine with a certain formidability when young, but which repays in spades when aged), in 2009 he harvested earlier than many of his peers. From here one can tell that he has gained an acute intuition which directs his approach with the changing conditions of a new vintage. The 2009s chez Damoy are particularly fragrant, juicy and bright, yet never lacking that Damoy signature of deeply sculpted, intense, spicy fruits.

Formerly an agricultural researcher, Pierre has inculcated a detailed and studied understanding the dynamics of the vineyard. He generally prefers a manual approach, such as ploughing, and uses no herbicides. Prior to fermenting, the grapes undergo a maceration of 4-7 days at approximately 15°C and the fermentation generally lasts 10-15 days in open vats, with caps punched down three times a day. The wines are matured in two-thirds new oak; for the most part in small Allier casks along with a few Tronçais barrels. The wines are never fined nor filtered.

The overall mood that characterises Damoy's wines is one of solid elegance. These are classically structured, deeply flavoured Burgundies full of dark fruits and minerality, peppered occasionally with floral tinged elements. They are unmistakably Gevrey-Chambertin. Damoy's meticulous choice of picking dates, harvesting naturally low-yielding vines and letting them grow up in the cellar through a slow elevage create wines rich in concentration and full of soil-inflected depths. His 2009s add ebullience and charm to the always solid base materials, making them especially expressive even when they are young. Still, Damoy's burgundies are the deceptively latent wines that would blossom to fully express its full graciousness and complexity with time. In short: a true Burgundy lover's treasure.

ARTISAN CELLARS is pleased to represent and offer DOMAINE PIERRE DAMOY 2009 Burgundy featuring a curated selection of the domaine's most distinctive wines, to be shipped direct from domaine and reach Singapore shores in January 2012. With increasing demand for his well-priced treasures, getting a few cases of his limited production Domaine wines is a blessing indeed, especially in the stiff global race for 2009 Burgundy wines.

Please note that due to limitations of quantity, orders will be confirmed on a first-come first-served basis, subject to availability and final written confirmation. If top-notch 2009 red burgundies are on your radar screen (as they should be), be quick and do not miss this selection.

TASTING NOTES

2009 Gevrey-Chambertin “Clos Tamisot” (Monopole)
“The 2009 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Tamisot bursts from the glass with notable exuberance in its dark fruit. This is an especially meaty, dense Gevrey villages. The aromas and flavors build impressively towards the long, powerful finish. The Clos Tamisot will require a measure of patience, but it is shaping up beautifully.” WA 89-91 points
(a monopole of the Domaine with vines that were planted in 1922) “This is also quite reduced and impossible to read aromatically. The rustic and serious flavors are blessed with buckets of extract that buffers well the very firm and mildly coarse tannins as well as coats the palate on the impressively long finish. This will not win any awards for elegance but the complexity and persistence are well above average for a villages level wine.” BH 89-91 points

2009 Chambertin Clos de Bèze “La Cabane” Grand Cru
(from young vines that made only 3 barrels — or 900 bottles — in 2009; vinified with 33% whole clusters) “A spicy, ripe and moderately floral nose speaks of dark berry fruit, game and plenty of earth notes that can also be found on the detailed, mineral-laden and relatively elegant medium-bodied flavors that are really quite serious for young vines, all wrapped in a mouth coating and solidly persistent finish. This can't match the regular cuvée but it's quite good all the same.” BH 90-92 points

2009 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
“Strong reduction obliterates the fruit. The rich, full-bodied and lightly mineral-suffused flavors however possess good freshness and vibrancy that culminate in an impressively complex, driving and palate staining finish that, somewhat surprisingly for the appellation, is quite rustic, serious and hugely long.” BH 91-94 points

2009 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
“A spicy but quite somber and restrained nose offers up dark berry fruit and slightly sauvage hints that introduce rich, powerful and impressively well-concentrated big-bodied flavors that are underpinned by chewy tannins and an explosively long and muscular finish. This is still extremely primary and while it will require the better part of two decades to reach its majority, it should be well worth the wait.” BH 92-95 points

2009 Chambertin Grand Cru
“Heavy reduction. An extremely concentrated and powerful mid-palate adds weight to the intensely mineral-driven and cool broad-shouldered flavors that possess chewy and mouth coating tannins that are largely, if not completely, buffered by the remarkable amounts of dry extract that is present in abundance on the focused, moderately austere and strikingly long finish. A wine for the very long-term.” BH 92-95 points
